12 Months

I'm well over a week late AGAIN! But, life is busy and his well-check wasn't until yesterday. This guy's 12th month was FULL of milestones and poor sleep. :-) It's been a whole year and we've had a blast. We're a lot more tired, but a whole lot happier with the buddy in our life. :-)

Weight & Length: His appointment wasn't until Thursday, so at almost 12.5 months he's 17lbs and 8oz and is 29" tall. He in the 25th percentile for height, but STILL in the 3rd percentile (on the WHO chart) for weight. He's WAY below the CDC chart, so the Dr. wants to send him to a dietician to do calorie counting. :/ **(I will add here that the Dr. would NOT be concerned if he was consistently in the 3rd percentile on the chart that she uses, but on the CDC chart that she uses he's below the 0 percentile. Read more about that here and here and please note that BOTH these sources are from the CDC that RECOMMENDS use of the WHO chart. I could write post after post on my frustration with this, but you would get bored.)**

They tested for anemia, gluten intolerance, etc. which I'm glad about. If there IS an issue, I'd love to know what it is so we can help! However, I don't think there will be an issue. I think he has been growing steadily on the WHO chart and will choose to ignore the CDC chart (the outdated one all the Drs still use for some silly reason) for now as it's not even recommended for use anymore! Why Drs. continue to use it and make decisions based on it I truly don't understand.

Sleeping:

He had very rough sleeping for several weeks. Naps were rough, lots of middle of the night wakings and we started to get nervous that we created some bad habits! BUT, then he started sleeping and eating better and voila! We noticed 2 molars!! They came before all his front teeth so we weren't expecting it at all. What a big boy!

He now sleeps from about 7:30pm-7am, then naps from about 9:30-11:30am and 2-4pm. He's going to go to a MDO (Mother's Day Out) program twice a week in the fall where they only nap once for about 1.5 hours, so I'm curious to see how that will go... ha! :-)

Eating:
He still has 3 solid meals a day. He's quite a finicky eater though (which obviously doesn't help with the weight gain) and sometimes he eats great and sometimes not so much. I really think it often has to do with teething. He WAS eating finger foods really well, but has been teething for about a month straight and sometimes will only eat babyfood out of a jar.

He now has goat's milk for his daytime meals, but breastmilk for breakfast and afternoon snack and formula before bed.

Clothing:

He needs 12 month clothes for his height, but still fits in his 9 month onesies.

Personality:

When the buddy was just 2 weeks old we took the "baby personality quiz" in the "Baby Whisperer" book and he was clearly a "Spirited" baby. And boy is that still true! When he's happy he's deliriously happy and when he doesn't want to do something he arches his back and screams LOUDLY. (We're working on this). And when he's sad (mostly just when he wakes up MOTN) he's very sad.

Thankfully, he's almost always very, very happy! He's so much fun! He loves running (or pretty close to it) around the house and getting into everything. He's SO curious! He likes reading books, dancing, playing hide and seek, squealing, getting tickled, getting his shoes and laughing. He's a blast!

Milestones & Firsts:

-Started dancing to music
-Recognized that both socks and shoes belong on his feet and try to put them on
-We discovered the egg allergy!
-He really started to enjoy playing the real piano and his play pianos.
-He passes the ball back and forth and says what sounds like "thank you."
-Tries to imitate Dave when he burps.
-He makes baskets in his basketball hoop.
-He started walking confidently!
-He started drinking goat's milk at lunch and dinner from a sippy cup.
-He started giving high-fives.
-He responds to "shake it" by shaking his maracas.
-He tries to tickle our feet!
-He LOVES kissing his stuffed animals and us!
-He knows that a dog says "woof, woof."
-He imitates us by whistling.
-He got his fifth tooth AND two molars, for a total of 7 teeth.

  2. My favorite one is shaking his maracas! Also, It's obvious he's healthy and growing, so don't let the doctor stress you out! He's stayed on that 3% growth curve consistently... that's a good thing right? xoxo

  3. Mary Anne- YES! Except it's not the growth chart that the Dr. uses, so she only wants to use the old growth chart. Blergh... Anyway, I added more above about it. :)

  4. I can't stand it when doctors get us all worried when we know our kids are eating. And let me just say, a hungry kid is an angry kid, and N seems to be quite happy and part of that has to do with his mommy feeding him good, healthy foods!

  5. Let me just say--from personal and up close observation--he is a happy, healthy, active, curious, communicative, social kid. Practically perfect in every way.
